The fact that most colleges have some form of blended teaching implies that there are a fair number of instructors who do not recognize the need for blended instruction. This may also be due to a lack of knowledge of faculty development programs and mentoring on teaching and learning. If your college offers a faculty development program that addresses both teaching and learning, I highly encourage you to make use of the resources available to you. Another way to learn more about teaching and learning is to learn from the best in your field. There are a number of journals that publish articles that outline the teaching process and give us suggestions for best practices. I highly recommend three specific journals that cover each of the domains of teaching and learning that I describe earlier in this chapte Teaching and Learning Journal of Distance Learning Journal of College and University Teachin Although the first two are academic journals, the last is a professional journal. The best way to learn about teaching and learning is to read published articles in these journals. For example, an article published in Teaching and Learning called "The Nature of Effective Teaching: A Study of the Teacher's Mind" suggests that the teacher "develops a theory of what is best, develops strategies to realize that theory, and learns to refine the theory, the strategies, and the evaluation based on experience." If you do not find a journal that covers what you need to learn, you could always read an article about a teaching and learning model that works well in your college, or in the field in general. I recommend reading articles that discuss both effective teaching and learning. In addition to journals, you can find a variety of articles that discuss teaching and learning on the web. A search for "teaching and learning" and "teaching practices" in Google Scholar and other online journals will help you find articles written by experts in the field. What is the best way to use these articles to help me better understand how to teach my students? I believe the best approach is to read the articles, and then think critically about what they mean for your teaching and how they could be applied to your teaching. In addition to the journal articles and the articles that you can find on the web, there are a number of books that offer a good foundation for understanding teaching and learning. To start with, I recommend that you read this book by Stephen W. Pender, which focuses on principles that work well with instruction: Wittenberg, C. R. (2001). Instructional principles: A systematic approach to teaching and learning. Alexandria, VA: Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
