classroom blended learning
The goal of the project was to create a curriculum which could be used as a
"blended learning" approach with both virtual and in-person students. We
considered the various types of instructional methods and came to the
conclusion that most students need to be able to use technology at the same
time they are in a traditional class. There has to be a physical space that
allows for this. Students have to be able to work on projects and have their
needs met in a virtual environment. The teacher has to engage in the
learning process to provide both students with the information they need
and, if appropriate, the needed discipline in the task. We have to
anticipate the needs of the various students, and work towards these needs.
If students are doing this for themselves, we have to provide help, but
it cannot interrupt the learning process of the student. We also have to be
in a position to help students in real time, in an environment that is as
realistic as possible. We decided on this curriculum as a result of:our previous work
using a virtual classroom.A study of the effectiveness of elearning SW-EN- JUL-2002-01.pdf)
A pilot study of 20,500 students in grades 1 through 12 by the International Virtual
Education Group, an offshoot of the Stanford Research Institute. Our own personal
experience as virtual education practitioners.
Using these
considerations, we were able to determine how we would need to change the
classroom setting in order to effectively teach this curriculum. Since
the learning process depends on physical space, we looked at places that
were available to us for this project and also looked at what we could use
for our own virtual classrooms. Our current classrooms have a physical
space with the requisite furniture, including computers. For the students
using the virtual classroom, we will use the same furniture and look for
the same things as they do. It is possible that we can use additional
furniture for our virtual classrooms, but it needs to be carefully
investigated in terms of the technology involved. The students will have
the choice of which virtual classroom to use, but a virtual classroom will
not be offered to every student. We are able to use the existing
classroom furniture, since we need not create our own virtual classrooms.
Because of the physical requirement of creating our own virtual
classrooms, we would need space that is available for three class periods
a day and in which students can use the desks for their individual work. The first virtual
classroom we will use has a large interactive whiteboard and computer
monitor that can be mounted on the wall. Each class would use these
equipment resources.
