The use of online, interactive learning and social interaction is on the increase.
With the emergence of online learning, schools are no longer limited to conventional classrooms. Online learning can be just as effective as in-class learning, and allow teachers to be present in students’ homes, enabling them to tailor courses to suit their needs.
According to the American Association of Community Colleges, the number of community college students is expected to increase by 19 percent from 2009 to 2014. It has been estimated that more than 2.4 million students will enroll in community colleges this year. However, the number of colleges that offer an online education option remains small. The University of Pittsburgh estimates that only half of those enrolled in community colleges have access to an online education, which is often limited to a few courses.
According to The Future of Online Education, the U.S. Department of Education predicts that by 2017, the number of students enrolled in online programs will have risen to 8.7 million.
A recent report from the National Center for Education Statistics estimates that by the end of 2010, 25.7 percent of postsecondary students had enrolled in an online course. By 2014, online education enrollment in community college will have increased to 28 percent.
Online education is often thought to be more efficient than in-class learning, because students have the ability to participate in real-time classes from anywhere in the world. The internet has also enabled students to interact with each other through social networks and blogs. This allows students to communicate with their professors and peers through online discussion groups, forums, chats and blogs, helping them connect to new learning opportunities.
A student can also easily access online class videos and textbooks, as well as study other students’ assignments and exams, for help and support. However, the use of online, interactive learning and social interaction is on the increase. The Internet and social networking sites, such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Blogger, are now being used to help students learn, collaborate, and communicate with each other.
According to a 2005 study by the University of Colorado, a significant majority of online education students report having social and emotional needs. These individuals tend to suffer from depression, anxiety and stress. They are also twice as likely to be in the lowest income bracket.
In order to cater to the individual needs of each student, online learning programs often offer multiple options, including face-to-face online classes and online classes delivered over the phone or through virtual personal instructors. Another trend is the move towards virtual colleges and career colleges, which offer both online and face-to-face courses, allowing students to combine online classes with in-class learning and help students to gain job experience while studying.
