science. We were able to use and adapt to our students a lot of the lessons that they found on different websites and books. There was a lot of great content and a lot of information given and that’s something we could really utilize for our own classes and with our own students.”When asked if anything really stood out to them about the program, Mr. Baskerville mentioned:One thing that stood out to me was when you’re teaching and you’re doing a lesson and you think you’re doing a good job, but when you get feedback you realize there’s a lot more that could be done. There were some things I did that the students thought were good and then there were other things that they thought we could have done better. You get that from [the online courses], it makes you realize there are ways to make the experience better and it’s a different way of learning.”Mr. and Mrs. Baskerville also mentioned that they felt that a student was engaged when they made a connection with the content, were willing to collaborate with others, and took responsibility for their learning. For Mrs. Baskerville, ICT’s online courses were very successful because of her students’ ability to learn independently and because of their eagerness to work in groups. Mrs. Baskerville had this to say:“One thing that stood out for me was that they were eager to work in groups. They were like, ‘Okay, I want to work in this group. I want to do this activity. I want to do this [online course].’ So, they’re like, ‘Well, if you’re going to teach us something, then I need to be a part of it.’ They’re really excited about it. It shows how well theyre understanding. It’s fun for them. They’re excited about it. They really get into it. So, it’s been very successful.”Mr. Baskerville echoed that he saw his students becoming more independent in their learning when they took online courses. He felt that when you learn something, then you have the opportunity to retain that knowledge and use it again. Mr. Baskerville shared this belief by stating, “It’s not like you’re just reading the book and then it’s done. You’re still learning even after you finish the book. It’s more like an extended period of learning.”Lastly, Mr. Baskerville noted that he liked the interaction that the online courses gave his students. They can really connect with each other and they can give each other suggestions. The online courses really do a good job at giving that extra communication. They allow you to really ask each other questions and say, ‘Okay, I got a question here. What should I do?’ ‘What did you think about this?’ It’s just the social aspect and the way that the online course really helps that.”As mentioned earlier, the Baskervilles would like to use the additional time they have to plan their future classes. Mrs. Baskerville explained, “We’d like to use that time and the online courses and plan a little bit more. This year we’d like to go ahead and [start planning] next year’s [classes] with some of the resources that we’ve been learning.”This teacher is one of many who are using technology as a tool to help their students learn. Technology is not a replacement of the learning process, but rather another way of interacting with the curriculum and the knowledge.
