students, and community members. Possible use The ICT has long been used in the teaching of languages. It can be used for the creation of teaching and learning materials that can be delivered online. Online courses are becoming increasingly popular, for example, for online university degrees. ICT resources are often developed for people studying at schools or universities. The ICT is the technology required to deliver most online courses.

The ICT may also be used to deliver "distance learning", online teaching (see for example online learning) or distance education (see for example, Internet in education). Distance learning and distance education have become popular with schools and colleges. Online courses are delivered over the Internet using a website. Students can either be at home, at work or in another location. They can also learn from a live teacher. Use in education The ICT is widely used in education. Some of the areas that it is used in include The use of computer technology for education has begun to spread in the early part of the twentieth century. The use of computers in education was seen as a modern way of learning; an early experiment involved the Harvard Mark I computer and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (1941–42). The Mark I was a mechanical digital computer that did number crunches as its main function. Some of the earliest known online learning programs began to emerge in the 1970s, some of these programs were computer-assisted instruction systems. In 1968, a course in the University of Oregon using a PDP-10 computer (a digital computer system) was initiated. The University of Oregon developed a "Learning Support System". In 1969, a course entitled "The World of Programming Languages" was implemented on a CDC 6600 computer system, this was the first programmable language course on a computer. The University of Maryland held an instructional systems conference in 1971 that resulted in computer-based instruction being implemented in over 1,000 schools. In 1975, The Computer Assisted Instruction Course for Teachers (CAITT) was introduced, this was a 3-month program for college and university level teachers. The United States Department of Education allocated $1.5 million to CAITT in 1975.In 1981, a course was introduced that provided learning for students via a mainframe computer (a computer system with large memory and a central processing unit). In 1981, the US President's Commission on Long-Range Energy Policy (the so-called "Kemp Commission" after its Chairman, Charles W. "Chuck" Keating, Jr.) issued a report on the long-range problems facing the United States and how they might be best solved. One of the conclusions of the report was a recommendation that the US would adopt a Computer-Based Primary and Secondary Education System (CBPS). The report was published by the University of California Press in 1983, but the recommendation was not implemented for another 15 years. In 1982, a project known as Project Inkling was initiated by the Association for Educational Communication and Technology (AECT). This project was known as CBPS. It aimed to develop a system that would implement a computer-based curriculum (a system of learning) using a computer system to implement a curriculum. The implementation was to be completed in two phases: The first phase was to develop a prototype for the first computer-based curriculum in the US. The second phase was to provide assistance to schools in developing their computer-based curriculum. In 1986, the United States Secretary of Education announced that the Department of Education would provide funding to the State Educational Technology Directors Association for its Computer-Based Instruction Initiative (COBI). This was a research project designed to develop and evaluate computer-based instruction (CBI) in public education. The project also aimed to evaluate whether CBI has more impact than traditional instruction. These three areas were to be addressed by COBI: developing standards and instructional materials for CBI implementing CBI in schools evaluating CBI in
