teaching methods pedagogy
I am using the Teaching As a Performance event from the first day at ISTE. I have had the privilege to work with four teachers who have all enjoyed using some form of this tool. One used it for the first time at a conference and the rest have used it to help connect their learning to the classroom. I loved this model when I was reading about it and had the opportunity to work with this method at ISTE 2017. Below are my observations on this approach.
This was a perfect model to use when I was working with teachers who were interested in performance. When I presented this to the teacher’s he did a great job of describing the idea to his class. After doing some online research and reading several other reviews, we decided this would be a good fit to use for a week long conference. I asked the teacher to share some of his class work before and after using the performance. He did. It really shows the difference using the framework of this tool.
When the teaching began, I took a moment to think about what is needed in the teaching space to connect the learning to the classroom. The first step in this model was to find a stage and ask the students to help design. After reading about it, I realized the stage should be a real-life scenario. So, the teacher and I looked for a school gym and found a stage from a recent production. The students were so excited to be making the set and having the opportunity to rehearse with their peers. It was really cool to see them create the set. While they were creating the set, we thought about using two chairs as the audience to help get the audience ready to watch. After that, we thought about a backdrop. One student was really good at drawing and the other made a really cool backdrop. I took those ideas and decided that these should be the props for the next class and created a small prop set with some materials that I found on line.
I really enjoyed this process because the teachers were working really hard to find props and learn about different tools they could use to make the props come to life. The first class really did a great job with the props. They did a great job of working together and I loved hearing their ideas about how the audience should interact with the set. When it was time to work together, the students took their seats and waited. We started to walk around and look at the set and take a few moments to discuss what we were seeing. When the time came for the first performance, the students had a great sense of anticipation. They were excited to get the audience ready and watch as they interacted with the set. We were both excited to see the performance. The way it unfolded really added to the value of the lesson. I didn’t have to do much as the students took the lead. They were interested and engaged and wanted to use all the tools to create something that looked good. It really
