tech in classroom.
tech in classroom."
But, then again, as we've all come to learn, there's little "tech in class" without a good "tech in the classroom" policy. That's another term that we're hearing more frequently here at the University as we look at this school year. The University of Southern Indiana in Hammond and Purdue University in Fort Wayne just started up their own technology schools. The Indiana University of Indianapolis had one for a time. The National University in Indianapolis had one before it closed in 2011. And then there's North Central Illinois College which opened the College of Technology & Allied Health Sciences in 2013, focusing on the latest trends in health care. In fact, one of our students here at the University of Chicago this year will be a senior in the College of Health Sciences with a major in Biomedical Engineering and Computer
Science. But we all know that the real heart of a technology school is in the instructional technology program. The College of Technology and Allied Health Sciences is focused on that. It's a small college with about 2,000 students, and it is the only university-based technology school in the area. It's about a half-hour drive east from the University of Chicago. This school-year is going to be a real challenge for the tech schools because there are so many ways we can use technology to help students, and a lot of it is being done internally as we try to provide instructional technology to all of our students whether they are in classes or not. It's one of the most fundamental services we can provide as a public university. So, the challenge is one that we've always faced -- the challenge to find funding, and the funding has gotten slower and slower and more and more difficult to come by. Last year, I know, about a half-billion dollars of stimulus money went to technology. And the following year, another half-billion dollars of stimulus money went to technology. And then the year after that, less stimulus money went to technology. But so far in the last three years, not a lot of stimulus money has gone to technology. And in fact, the most recent budget that President Obama signed into law was only about $1.4 billion dollars for K-12 and $200 million for higher education. We're working hard to use technology to find innovative ways to teach our students. And then, the other challenge we face is that we're only able to offer the online classes for the non-credit students, but we have a lot of undergraduate students who want the online classes. So, what we're going to do this year is to look at ways to combine the online classes with the in-class, and so we're going to offer
